Smart-energy solutions may be getting a lot of attention in the industrial and commercial sectors, but according to Paul Lau of the Sacramento, Calif., public utility SMUD, getting consumers engaged will require making a case for the technology in terms they can understand, namely cost. The first step is for utilities to leverage smart-meter data to gauge customer use patterns and to show users how they can cut energy costs. "Once consumers find out how they use energy, they will ask what they can do to improve their energy efficiency," Lau said.
