The Iowa Board of Education last month was asked by the state's Department of Education to consider endorsing a new national teacher-preparation certification board called the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the standards for which should be completed this summer. The board asked for more information on the program, which will be discussed again next month. Some officials say national teaching standards would help educators because currently no two states have the same expectations for teachers -- requiring a teacher who moves to take additional tests to qualify in a new state.
