Plant selection is vital to the appearance, function of rain gardens

To make the most of rain gardens, select plants that can tolerate moisture while adding beauty, according to Brendan Lederer, trails manager at the Berks County Parks & Recreation Department in Pennsylvania. Rain gardens suit areas with runoff, such as driveways, downspout locations and discharge areas for sump pumps. Plants that do well for rain gardens include native species and ornamental grasses as well as red maple and river birch trees, Lederer said.
