Build engaging lessons by connecting with real-world issues

Enlisting students to address real-world issues is an effective motivator, National Board Certified Teacher Bill Ferriter suggests in this blog post. Ferriter, a middle-grades educator, writes about his plans to include students in an anti-bullying campaign as part of a lesson that links to the sixth-grade language arts curriculum. Offering links to his teaching materials, Ferriter will give students access to images, quotes and statistics on bullying and software to combine them into public-service announcements.
