Check-in marks hoteliers' first opportunity to wow guests

A number of hoteliers have taken steps to make their guests' arrival more memorable as a way to leave a positive first impression and ease their guests into the hotel atmosphere. Free treats during check-in include candies, locally produced wine and traditional gifts such as leis. "Guests like to take something away from that first interaction, and even if you give them a coupon for an appetizer or a drink in the hotel restaurant they take a lot out of those interactions," said Ron Gromoll, general manager of the Best Western Plus Gateway Grand in Gainesville, Fla.
