Manifestation of autism symptoms may predict age of diagnosis

The average age of autism diagnosis among children who showed just seven of 12 recognized symptoms was 8.2 years compared with 3.8 years for those having all the symptoms, a study found. Researchers noted that repetitive movements, routine inflexibility and nonverbal communication impairments were linked to earlier diagnosis, while speech, interaction and conversation issues were associated with delayed diagnosis. The findings appear in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
