Researchers work on chemical fix for Boeing's Dreamliner batteries

Scientists are developing a chemical solution using nonflammable electrolyte solvents to help prevent lithium-ion batteries used by Boeing's 787 Dreamliner from overheating and bursting into flames. The Li-ion batteries carried by the plane model have flammable organic solvents, and the new formulation makes use of perfluoropolyethers and poly(ethylene oxide) or polyethylene glycol. "Recently, it dawned on us that polyethylene glycol is known to be a good medium to dissolve lithium salts," said Joseph DeSimone of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
