Study: Higher diabetes risk in HCV patients tied to ALT

Hepatitis C patients are only at greater risk of type 2 diabetes if they have elevated levels of alanine aminotransferase, Italian researchers reported in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. The study authors said higher ALT levels could come from HCV itself or from other conditions, such as metabolic syndrome or steatohepatitis.
