USDA, FDA target rural smart grid with new funding

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has earmarked $280 million for improvements in the rural electricity sector, including $6 million to fund new smart grid projects. The funding -- which will support projects in 13 states -- is being delivered in tandem with construction dollars from the Food and Drug Administration, which will go toward building out or upgrading 1,900 miles of transmission lines.
