Utilities work out the business case for microgrids

Microgrids are emerging as the next big thing in the next-generation energy sector, but while the technology to develop closed, self-healing power networks is firmly in place, the industry is still working out the market case for widespread deployment, Katherine Tweed writes. In the absence of a solid economic case for microgrid deployment, most build-outs have been spearheaded by universities and the military, where resiliency often trumps cost as an investment driver.
