Gates criticizes Pentagon bureaucracy, not contractors

Defense Secretary Robert Gates is taking his vision of a re-prioritized military on the road with speeches to young officers at service leadership schools. At the Air War College in Montgomery, Ala., on Wednesday, Gates said too many Pentagon planners have viewed Iraq and Afghanistan as "exotic distractions" despite the fact that "young Americans were fighting and dying every day." While calling for new strategies, Gates has avoided the sharply critical tone of President Barack Obama, who said last month that some U.S. weapons programs "are designed to make a defense contractor rich."
