TV outlets seeing higher ratings, saving money with news shows

Fox affiliate WJBK-TV in Detroit is among the stations reaping higher ratings and cost savings from replacing syndicated shows with local news programming. WJBK, after changing the lineup last year, has seen a 65% boost in the key 18-to-49 segment for its 11 p.m. time slot and a 33% hike in its 4:30 a.m. slot. "News has held up better than some of our syndicated programming," said Jack Abernethy, CEO of Fox stations. "Local news is less expensive and has better revenue potential than many syndicated programs."
