Brazil blazes smart-grid implementation trail

Brazil has more than 60 million electrical meters, representing more than half of all such meters in Latin America, this article notes. Its government plans to spend $60 billion on energy projects by 2014 and hopes to install 63 million smart meters by 2021. The sprawling country's investment in smart grids is forecast by the Northeast Group to total $36.6 billion by 2022 as the nation seeks to reduce the theft of electricity, boost electrical infrastructure reliability, provide new pricing plans for consumers and foster economic development.
