Rent claims high percentage of income for more Americans, data show

Average rental rates declined from 2009 to 2011, but the percentage of renters spending more than 35% of their income on housing increased to 44.3% from 42.5%, a report from the U.S. Census Bureau shows. More Americans became renters over the two-year time frame, and national vacancy fell to 7.4%.
