NuScale touts reactor cooldown technology

NuScale Power said it has developed a fail-safe valve system for a small modular reactor that can safely cool down without using power. The system also needs no operator action or additional water should power be lost, the company said. "Because of our unique design, it allows the NuScale plant to achieve a Triple Crown for nuclear safety -- to safely shut down and self-cool indefinitely, with no operator action, no AC or DC power, and no additional water," said Jose Reyes, NuScale co-founder and chief technology officer.
