Supermarkets ramp up rivalry with restaurants

Supermarkets are pushing ahead with efforts to boost sales of prepared meals, with some opening in-store restaurants that offer the option to dine in, including Illinois-based Mariano's Fresh Market, which opened Todd's BBQ restaurant last month in its newest store and plans to build the concept into future supermarkets. "Consumers are interested in a higher quality food, but in a more casual setting that they can either eat on premise at a fast casual operation or take with them," Datassential managing director Brian Darr said.
