Traceability program aims to balance flexibility and safety

The USDA's livestock traceability program, mainly affecting interstate cattle travel, went into effect last month, and public health officials say the goal is to help track and contain disease outbreaks. The program is mandatory but allows flexibility regarding how animals are tagged in an attempt to address ranchers' concerns with an earlier, wider-reaching version of the program that was ultimately sent back to the drawing board.
