Using Twitter to map language distribution

Research suggests that Twitter may be a viable tool for mapping the distribution of languages around the world. By analyzing location-tagged tweets with an automated language detector, researchers were able to produce a close approximation of the borders of European countries. The technique also allowed scientists to identify areas where Korean and Russian are spoken within New York City.
