"W visa" program could hamper industry's growth

The U.S. Senate's bipartisan immigration reform proposal would provide interim legal status to about 11 million undocumented people. However, the construction industry is "up in arms" over the "W visa" provision in the bill, which will grant only 15,000 W visas a year to construction workers, a move that could prove a deterrent to economic growth. "Setting severe and arbitrary restrictions on construction workers isn’t just bad policy, it is bad economics," said Stephen Sandherr, CEO of the Associated General Contractors of America.
