Carnival Corp. to invest up to $700M in improving fleet reliability

Carnival Corp. announced plans to upgrade ships across all of its lines to bolster safety and security measures at sea. The project, which is estimated to cost as much as $700 million, will include a $300 million overhaul of the Carnival Cruise Lines fleet to install additional emergency backup systems. "Although every ship in our fleet currently has emergency backup power which is designed to enable the continuous operation of safety equipment and some hotel services, it is our intent to significantly bolster the backup power to support the core hotel services," said Carnival Cruise Lines President and CEO Gerry Cahill.
