Guidelines expand eligibility for weight-loss surgery to mildly obese

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the Obesity Society released new guidelines that lowered the BMI threshold to allow mildly obese patients with diabetes or metabolic syndrome to undergo weight-loss surgery. The groups also called for a mandatory team approach to patient care and reclassification of sleeve gastrectomy as a proven, not experimental, weight-loss surgery. The guidelines were published in the journals Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, Endocrine Practice and Obesity.
