India needs larger bone marrow donor pool, experts say

Diversity of human leukocyte antigen genes and a small donor pool in India have led to difficulty in finding bone marrow donor matches for patients with blood conditions. "We need to have at least half a million donors representing various ethnic groups in India," said N.K. Mehra, head of immunology and immunogenetics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.
