The Memphis, Tenn., area has seen a surge of freight railroad activity. As the Class I's invest billions to strengthen their network and operational efficiency, more companies have turned to them for shipping. NS opened a $105 million intermodal facility in the area last summer. It will have a "10-year economic impact of more than $2.7 billion and will create 6,200 jobs by 2020 in the Memphis region," according to AAR. BNSF opened a $200 million yard in the area in 2010. Canadian National, Union Pacific and CSX have also invested in the Memphis region.
