Physicians find pros, cons to having EHR systems

Family physician Chris Tashjian, M.D., says having an electronic health record system has changed how he sees patients, allowing him to be more proactive in providing preventive care. Some physicians say EHRs impede patient care, however, and Jason Mitchell, M.D., director of the AAFP's Center for Health IT, says customization and ongoing work are needed to help maximize the potential of EHR systems.
