E-prescribing brings cost discussion to exam rooms

Doctors are more likely to prescribe a lower-cost drug if they are using electronic software that shows cost information, a recent study found. Edward Lawrence writes that insurers, public programs and employers have worked to develop cost control incentives in benefits, including the design of pharmacy benefits. Strategies include broader use of generic therapies, mail service and other pharmacy options and greater utilization of electronic prescriptions.
