Lawmakers' criticism mounts against the common core

As states are implementing the Common Core State Standards, the guidelines adopted by 45 states and the District of Columbia are increasingly being criticized -- and in some cases challenged -- by some lawmakers. The Republican National Committee passed a resolution criticizing the standards and calling them an "inappropriate overreach to standardize and control the education of our children," while Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, has launched an effort to eliminate federal funding for the common core.
