More firms adopt employee stock ownership plans

Many business founders are using employee stock ownership plans to transfer partial or total ownership of their companies to their employees. The number of employee-owned businesses rose 12% from 2007 to 2011, according to the National Center for Employee Ownership. Some company founders point to the cultural benefits of employee-ownership plans, but the practice also has detractors who worry that workers may lose their savings when businesses fail.
