Calif. homeowners can opt out of smart-meter installations

Residential customers of San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison can decide against having wireless smart meters installed at their homes, the California Public Utilities Commission has decided. To keep their existing electric and gas meters, however, those customers will have to pay an initial fee of $75 and a $10 monthly charge.
