Concrete and steel may eventually yield to a more biological model in our urban structures as architecture increasingly takes advantage of such technologies as additive manufacturing, synthetic biology and swarm robotics. An early effort along these lines is Project Cyborg at Autodesk Research's Bio/Nano/Programmable Matter lab, where engineers are working on ways to model the microscopic world with the goal of biofabrication.
