Chemical compound could help roofs reduce air pollution

Titanium dioxide combined with some building products appears to help reduce air pollution via a chemical process: ultraviolet light hits the material, and a reaction begins and breaks up the smog, making it less noxious. Boral Roofing has created terra-cotta roof tiles in which titanium dioxide has been embedded. The company claims that 2,000 square feet of those tiles could offset pollution stemming from 10,800 miles of driving.
