HAART therapy may protect hearts of HIV-positive children

Researchers looked at the heart structure of nearly 600 HIV-positive and negative children and found that those who used highly active antiretroviral therapy had better heart function than those who didn't receive the drug combinations. "Our results indicate that the current use of combination [antiretroviral therapy], usually HAART, appears to be cardioprotective in HIV-infected children and adolescents," researchers said. The study appeared online in JAMA Pediatrics.
