How the smart grid can help staunch runoff in the water sector

Applying smart solutions to water distribution networks can save utilities $12.5 billion in lost revenues because of waste, loss and theft, experts say. According to Megan Dean, a senior research analyst at Zpryme, a number of major water companies around the world are already taking a page from the electricity sector and deploying smart meters and advanced monitoring solutions from market leaders such as IBM, Sensus, GE and Itron to upgrade ailing infrastructure, improve accuracy and reward end-users for their conservation efforts.
