Schools tread carefully into the world of beta testing

Beta testing, in which school districts agree to test a product or program -- such as new technology -- is typically how education products get their start. However, the process can be challenging for schools and product developers, including the loss of instructional time and additional work for teachers. It also can be difficult to stage a successful test, and following a beta test it's possible a product will never make it to market.
