Senators draft drug-tracking bill

Four U.S. senators have drafted a bill to replace patchwork state rules with a federal law to track prescription drugs throughout the supply chain. The plan would require a chain of custody for drugs as they pass from drugmakers to repackagers, distributors, logistics firms and dispensers. "In fact, right now, we know more from a barcode on a gallon of milk than from a barcode on a bottle of pills, which could mean the difference between life and death," said Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo.
