Why cover letters get ignored

Bad cover letters typically suffer from one of three problems: they're formulaic, they restate your resume or they take on a "confessional" tone, writes Drake Baer, citing an article from the Harvard Business Review. Only send a cover letter if you know the name of the person who will be reading it, or if you've been personally referred to the company, he advises.
