Catholic school teacher fired after officials learn of lesbian partner

Carla Hale, a physical education teacher who worked at Bishop Watterson High School in Columbus, Ohio, for 19 years, was fired after her mother's obituary mentioned that the she was survived by Hale and her partner. Whoever fired Hale could face criminal charges, since there are no religious exemptions to a municipal ordinance in Columbus that bans anti-gay discrimination in employment, according to Hale's attorney. The school has received hundreds of calls, some from outside the state, expressing support for Hale, and more than 7,000 have signed a petition calling for her reinstatement.
