FDA: Worn mattress covers pose blood-borne infection risk

The FDA has released a safety communication citing concerns that worn medical bed mattress covers could pose a risk of exposure to blood and other bodily fluids. "The FDA is concerned that fluid ingress from worn or damaged medical bed mattress covers may be widespread and largely under-recognized by health care providers, health care facility staff and caregivers," the agency wrote. The FDA crafted 10 recommendations for inspection, removal, replacement and maintenance.
