How ambition can erode relationships and decrease happiness

While ambition drives many people to seek their fortunes away from family and friends, the lack of relationships and social connections might cause stress and unhappiness, research shows. Marriage, family ties, neighbors, civic engagements and workplace ties are found to be "robustly related to happiness and life satisfaction, both directly and through their impact on health," social scientists John Helliwell and Robert Putnam find.
