Palo Alto, Calif., creates searchable online database of city

Palo Alto, Calif., became the first city to make its GIS data available to the public using Google's Fusion Tables platform. The tables will provide access to data sets on location, road centerlines and land use among others, and will give users the ability to map, chart and query the data. Web developers can also access the data sets through the Fusion Tables application programming interface.
