Robot-assisted breast reconstruction may shorten recovery time

Patient recovery times are shorter when a da Vinci robotic surgical system is used in post-mastectomy reconstruction, says plastic surgeon Jesse Selber, an assistant professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. "The robotic procedure involves an approach through the axilla, the armpit, through a short incision, and it makes use of the optical and precision capabilities of the machine to gain access to the muscle without the back incision," Selber said. He also uses the system in other surgeries involving small blood vessels.
