Weather damage to shingle roofs can be seen inside and out

The life span of asphalt shingle roofs varies depending on their exposure to the elements, according to Robert Mackes, owner of Mackes Construction in Saylorsburg, Pa. Homeowners can get an idea of the extent of weather damage on the roof by climbing up a ladder and looking -- but not climbing on the roof, which is dangerous, according to the National Roofing Contractors Association. Stains on the wood layer in the attic could also indicate leaks, the organization said.
