White House backs online sales tax; Senate prepares for key vote

The Senate looks set to vote on, and probably pass, legislation giving states the power to tax online purchases. The White House gave the sales-tax plan a resounding endorsement, saying that state and local officials, plus many business leaders, had "overwhelmingly" backed the proposal. Major retailers support the bill, which they say would close a loophole that gives online retailers an unfair price advantage over bricks-and-mortar stores.
