A number of mobile applications -- including Spotify, Pandora and those from Zynga -- now offer both free, ad-supported services, as well as subscription-based services with little or no advertising. That gives app-makers a perverse incentive to make ads intrusive and annoying in order to drive subscription revenues. "There are enough bad ads out there without making them intentionally bad," complains Michael Learmonth.
