Adherence to a healthy diet and an active lifestyle is the cornerstone for prevention of heart disease, said Lynne Braun, a nurse practitioner at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. She said although medications are helpful for high-risk people, they tend to target just one of many cardiovascular risk factors, such as elevated blood pressure or blood glucose.
