N.Y. county's lapses in fuel-tank monitoring could cost $800,000

New York's Erie County paid $275,000 in federal fines this month over improper record-keeping for fuel storage tanks. Total costs related to the infractions, however, may surpass $800,000, including a potential $465,000 to ensure other county-owned tanks are in compliance with federal laws. The Environmental Protection Agency found no leaks when it inspected the tanks, an EPA spokesman said.
