Blog: U.S. airlines could auction off unsold seats

Foreign airlines have started the practice of selling unsold seats via online auctions, and U.S. airlines may follow suit. The Plusgrade system allows fliers to bid on seats in premium cabins or even on empty middle seats to allow for more space. "More customers are enjoying our premium cabins, and we're getting more revenue," said Mark Street, Air New Zealand's head of customer loyalty.
