Online sales tax legislation may prove costly for some small businesses

Some advocates of the Marketplace Fairness Act, a bill under consideration in the Senate, say it could level the playing field between large online retailers and local physical stores by allowing states to collect taxes on both. However, Shannon Schmidt-Hildago, owner of Florida-based Green Light Fire Bag, says the bill would require her to invest thousands of dollars in a system to track taxes across various states. As proposed, the legislation would apply only to business earning more than $1 million annually in out-of-state sales.
