2 potential fixes considered for broken bolts on Calif.'s Bay Bridge

California transportation officials say two alternatives are being considered for the snapped anchor rods on the $6.4 billion San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge and the final choice, cost and timing estimates will be announced on May 8. The fixes involve "clamping steel -- either a saddle or a collar -- around the shear keys at the tops of the columns on the pier located just east of the massive main span tower," said Andre Boutros, executive director of the California Transportation Commission. "The new system that will be put on top of the columns will be just as good if not better than the shear keys."
