Committee updates privacy act with e-mail warrant provision

The Senate Judiciary Committee passed an update to the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act requiring that law enforcement agencies obtain a warrant before reading e-mails. The bill will head next to the floor of the Senate for a vote. The update "drew strong support from a broad coalition of more than 100 privacy, civil liberties, civil rights and tech industry leaders," writes Katy Bachman.
