Device to evaluate quality of stored blood is in development

Blaze Medical Devices is working on a tabletop system and disposable cartridges that can be used by hospitals to assess the quality of stored blood units based on the mechanical fragility of red blood cell membranes. The Ann Arbor, Mich.-based company says it could launch a research-only version of the technology in late 2013.
